The kinds of characters that are present in this tale.
Witch: A supernatural being who has risen above humans. They can use magic, and humanity's rules do not apply to them. While witch is a gender neutral term, male witches are called Sorcerers. Apprentice witches are usually children. There exist witches who can exist only on some or just one proper game board (but due to higher witches claiming them as a piece or becoming a guardian to them, they can appear in many games). There exist witches who are Game Masters. Above them are Voyager Witches, who can go from story to story (or game board to game board) and take part in those games. Lastly, the most powerful witches are Creator Witches, who have an existence similar to a god and have created many game boards.
Servants: These are characters who work to keep the island of Ayashima and its guests pleasant. They can be human or furniture. They are considered of a lower social ranking than guests and do not eat with the guests. Servants have a real name but are given a name with the kanji for sound at the end, so servants are named things like Shion or Berune. Servant jobs include maids, butlers, a chef and people working for the chef, a head of staff, and gardeners. There are day and night shift workers.
Furniture: Furniture are magical servants who are often tied to a witch or sorcerer who created them, save for the furniture tied to the island. They are different from regular servants in that they have offensive or defensive abilities to protect their master. Furniture are considered subhuman, and can be only considered human if they find love with a human. The furniture for the island have the same jobs as the regular servants.
Humans: These are ordinary human beings who come to Ayashima. They cannot use magic, and are generally unaware of the games occurring. Some humans are able to transcend to the Meta plane and interact with witches and furniture as well as pieces.
Game Masters: Only a select few witches can reach this rank, and any human/piece who can understand the game rules completely can become a Game Master (as well as a witch/sorcerer). They can create many tales with the game board they are in charge of (in the right hands, anyway).
Pieces: A general term for any character on a game board. Witches often treat the pieces like chess pieces. Pieces that are self-aware are generally able to act in the Meta World as well as on the gameboard, but the person operating the piece cannot meet their piece self and vice versa. Note: Pieces can either be humans or furniture, but have the status as piece as well as their species.
