The private island of Ayashima has a long history of being connected with a Russian witch named Eli. Legends say that she made a contract with the masters of Ayashima to make Ayashima profitable, and in exchange, Ayashima at night is her domain. To honor this commitment, a portrait of Eli the Golden Witch hangs in the main mansion of Ayashima, and below is an epitaph dedicated to her.
The epitaph reads:
"To all who come to Ayashima, please respect of the Golden Witch Eli, the mistress of the island at night. She is the one who ensured Ayashima of its prosperity. To reach her Golden Land, these are the steps to put her at rest.
Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown.
You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key
As you travel down it, you will see a village.
In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of.
There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.
The one who obtains the key must then travel to the Golden Land in accordance with these rules
On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices.
On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close.
On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name.
On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill.
On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.
On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth twilight, the journey shall end, and you shall reach the capital where the gold dwells
The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
One shall be, to put the witch to sleep for all time."
Rumor has it that the witch intends to carry her epitaph out on Ayashima.
The mysterious benefactor who owns the tiny resort island of Ayashima has decided to throw a gala in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Ayashima's history as a resort island. The Master of Ayashima has chosen to invite long time visitors of Ayashima, and also chose to do a random drawing, inviting different families and their representatives to come and stay for the celebration. With various servants to cater to their whims and an all-expenses paid trip, who could resist such an offer, even with the rumors of the witch?
Meanwhile, off the island, Ayashima has gathered quite a lot of attention, with forgeries about a massacre on the island circulating everywhere. The most famous of these story writers is Tobirano Tengoku, and those who can discover Tengoku's true identity are invited to discuss what he has deemed the truth. Truth or lie, fact or fiction, forgery or reality, what can a manga artist offer about a mysterious incident that everybody doesn't already know?
